Y2S1 Week 16: Reproduction Final, Thanksgiving, and a Tree Disaster!
Week 16 started off with a quick run around the block followed by a nice hot yoga session. I then had some time to review before the reproduction anatomy practical. This was our last anatomy practical, and it’s fun to look back at just how much anatomy we learned over the past year! I then had time to study for the upcoming reproduction final before heading to the undergraduate campus to instruct a communication lab. This lab built off the communication lecture from a few weeks ago and was a way for the students to put their skills to use and practice with classmates. At the end of the session, we had a group reflection and went over some key points from the lab. Communication is a cornerstone of veterinary medicine and honing these skills early is crucial for a successful career. The rest of the night involved some final studying and snuggle time with Churro.
Tuesday morning started with a run with Churro followed by the final exam of the reproduction block. I then hopped into the car with Churro and made my way home. After a full afternoon of driving, Churro was able to reunite with some of his favorite people, my parents.
Wednesday morning started with a quick run followed by some yoga. This yoga session was a little extra special because my dad, and Churro, joined in the fun. I then had the opportunity to go and work a shift at my hometown clinic. This clinic, and the wonderful people who work there, have been there for me from day one when I knew close to nothing about veterinary medicine. They raised me from the ground up, and it is always such a privilege to work there over my breaks. During the day we had some fun lameness cases and I also got to see some special returning patients.
Thanksgiving morning began with a long run with my dad and Churro. Every year, my dad and I do a fun hilly run to kick-start the morning. This run is 11 miles and the massive hill at the midway point is always humbling. It is so special to have this tradition and spend some quality time on the trails. Churro got to join in the fun and this year we were watching my swim coach’s dog, Nessie, who also nailed the trail run. We then had some time to prepare for dinner before heading over to my aunt and uncle’s house for some quality family time. It is so special to all be together for the day and catch up with everyone. It wouldn’t have been a normal holiday get-together without some sort of athletic competition so after dinner, we had a little planking event and set a maximum time because we knew everyone was too competitive to let someone else win. The rest of the evening was spent watching a Christmas movie with the family and pups.
Friday morning, after a quick walk with the dogs, I got in a swim session with my hometown team. It was awesome to get back in the pool and sprint with some old friends! After that, my family and I went to a Christmas tree farm and picked out a nice tree, which we decorated and got to enjoy for about 15 minutes before it decided to fall over. After a quick cleanup session, we moved the tree outside and decided to buy a better tree base before attempting to put it back up. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing with the family and watching another Christmas movie.
Saturday morning started with a quick run with the pups followed by a 20-mile bike ride with my parents. Joining them on these rides is always a blast and I am so fortunate to have such awesome parents who enjoy physically challenging themselves! The rest of the day was spent redecorating the tree and I also had the opportunity to get a nice massage. The day ended with a family dinner and yet another Christmas movie to close out the night.
Sunday began with a fun hilly run with my dad. It was great to get some extra hill work in before heading back up to Davis, which is extremely flat. The rest of Sunday was spent driving back up to Davis and getting ready for our next block. I am so grateful that I had the chance to come home and spend time with my family this past week. Everyone has such busy lives and it keeps getting harder to coordinate times when everyone is together so times like this, when we are all in the same place, are extra special!
As a side note, the notes section of this website has been updated with cardio, endocrine, and reproduction notes!
